^ ^ "rules" that, say, make "independence" and "self-reliance" such high priorities?

^ ^ Nuthin' wrong with those ideals. But they're not the only ones, and if you recall, this country was also founded on 'teamwork' and 'interdependence' (aka, the United States of America). And frankly the only time we've ever had a major "disagreement" over that, has been precisely from the Fundie, "rural self-reliant", aka "hillbilly" folks.

^ ^ Well, there's some disagreement about all that, but yes, that usually refers to folks of the "southern" persuasion. Who BTW, apparently trace most of their ancestry to your Ulster-Scots "relatives" in the British Isles, a group that also cherishes "fightin'" culture and rugged independence above all else.

Smithsonian Channel: "Born Fighting"
In this landmark series, Senator Jim Webb tells the largely forgotten story of the Scots-Irish, a people whose values, culture and fighting spirit profoundly shaped America. Follow Senator Webb as he tracks their heroes and legends from William Wallace to Andrew Jackson, the first of 17 Scots-Irish U.S. Presidents. Their Bible-thumping, battle-scarred march for independence took them from Scotland to Northern Ireland and finally the open expanses of early America, where they would leave an indelible mark on the national character.

^ ^ LOL… yeah, I'm aware of the Four British Folkways, although our "Southerners" (aka, "Scotch-Irish") still originated in your particular neck-o-the-woods!

they might come from the same Islands but that's where the similarity ends. all have their own distinct and separate identities and as my wife has just been doing my family tree I know I have no Scottish or irish ancestors. my family have come from North Devon for centuries, my grandfather served in WW1 (Devon regiment) and my father in WW2(Royal Artillery). Barnstaple is my ancestral home and there are literally hundreds of people in that town with my surname-and their all related to me-if you go back far enough.

No offense, but that seems kinda hard to imagine, considering SW England was originally settled by the celts, and already over 40% of the American population is estimated to have some sort of Scots-Irish ancestry (and we're not nearly as old as GB)!

BTW, here in Northern California, one of the largest concentrations of Cornish ancestry & culture in the world is nearby Grass Valley.
