This. Personally, I think it's even weirder to NOT like free things!

Now, I'm not going to take something I really don't need JUST because it's free - like if you tried to give me a case of baby food, I'd say no thanks. And I also won't choose what to eat based on good deals, but if I'm trying to decide between a few items and one is "on special," I'll probably take that. Why the heck not?? And I didn't grow up poor, btw; quite the opposite in fact. But I am Jewish, sooooooo.

Because money is tight for them? Since you have to BUY everything and when you don't have a lot of money, you can't (or shouldn't) buy the things you want. It's not fun to want something but cannot get it because getting it means spending money that you don't have. So when it's available for free, you are not restricted by that money barrier, so you snatch up as much as you can.

That would be obvious, of course. But I've already tried to explain that is not the case with the ones I have been asking about, otherwise I wouldn't have asked.

It’s the principle for such folks. They see no reason to reward the higher priced station for its proximity, and would rather support a business with lower prices, regardless of the final cost to them.

I am cheap and love getting free stuff. A couple of my favorite fast food places have been giving away free food during their slow times. You bet I was there for breakfast one day and lunch the next.

And I got a free senior drink each day.

So there.
