I don't mind answering your rent question. We're paying $1250/mo but it's a home with a canal and inground pool. I saw much cheaper homes not on canals and no pools, but not in the range you're aiming for.

Here are the apartments that I found. So you are saying they aren't in good areas? From pictures they look very nice. I know pics can be deceiving but here they are....

1. Seven Palms Apartments - Punta Gorda, FL 33950 | Apartments for Rent
2. Murdock Circle Apartments - Port Charlotte, FL 33948 | Apartments for Rent
3. Rotonda Lakes Apartments - Rotonda West, FL 33947 | Apartments for Rent

In some ways I do think that a bigger city such as Fort Myers would be better for us, however if my fiance can't find a nursing job then it really doesn't matter. She has applied from Jacksonville all down the west coast and up into the panhandle. Punta Gorda/PC so far is the only area she is having any luck with.
Murdock Circle Apts is bad, stay away from there. We didn't research the crime stats prior to moving my retired mother there and found out quickly the amount of crime.

Rotonda Lakes Apts is a 55+, much safer!
