Question for the cycle owners: I just bought a new-to-me bike that has loud pipes. The seller still had his original pipes and included them in the sale, so I'm hopping to switch them up. I've been told by some, and had other refute the claim, that I will have to have the carbs adjusted because of the different pipes. Anybody switch up pipes and have to adjust their carbs because of doing so?

When you go from stock pipes to a more free flowing exhaust the carbs usually need to be richened up a bit (bigger jets). Some people try and get away without rejetting the carb, but you would notice the loss of performance and other problems. It depends on the bike and how open the pipes are. Sometimes you can just tweak the mixture screws, but normally bigger jets are required to do it right.

Sooooo...without knowing if the original owner rejetted the carbs for the open pipes you won't know until you swap pipes back if you'll have to do anything or not. It may run a little rich and backfire, or it may run even better than it does now.

Thanks, HR. I do know the carbs were rejetted but I don't know if it was because of the pipes or the hypercharger he put on it, or a combo of both . I guess I'll just take it into the shop and let them check/tune it after I swap out the pipes.

I've probably been through this process a dozen times. It's very likely that the air cleaner has also been either changed or modified so you will want to consider that as well since that's an integral part of the air flowing through the system.
