We are coming again to visit the wonderful Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte area in hopes of making it our next home. We are flying into Punta Gorda Airport instead of Ft. Meyers Airport. This is a definite plus, except there seems to be quite a difference in rental car prices between the two airports. We can rent a car at RSW for $13 a day. The price to rent a car at PGD is $51 a day. Does anyone have any suggestions for a reasonable car rental agency in either Port Charlotte or Punta Gorda?

Yes, rental car prices are more expensive in this area because they are not used as much as the Ft Myers area. Do you have AAA or another type of program that offers discounts for rental cars? I would call a few and see what prices you get. I have never rented a car here so I can't help with pricing. Good luck.

Find a discount code online and enter it on the rental website and see which one(s) give you the best discount. You should be able to get it down to $35-40.

Have you tried Priceline.com? We have used that service several times and bid on a car with a (low) price I am willing to pay...lower than the advertised price ( I start at $12 day usually for mid/full size car) and have gotten decent deals in the past.

Thanks for the advice. I did use Priceline and got a car for $16/day. Much better than $50/day.

Oh Great! Yes we have been using Priceline for a few years now when we travel. It doesn't hurt to try!! And we have not had any issues with using them! Great for hotels also but you don't know the hotel chain prior to purchase. If you do your research and know what options are available you pretty much know what chain it is. I had a colleague that had a formula for bidding on rooms. It was over my head but he would usually get good deals on 4 and 5 star hotels!!

If you're a little adventurous and on a road trip, you can get great deals on 4 and 5 star hotels by waiting until after dinner on the night you need to go on Priceline. I've stayed at 5 star resorts for 50 bucks a night, but you can usually only get one night at that price, so not so good if you want to stay a week.

I looked into priceline for a rental car and it was cheaper for the 1st day but 2nd-7th day was higher daily rate ( a lot higher). But they advertised the price as the 1st day price and I had to read the fine print about the higher daily rate for days 2-7. I read this before booking/paying. Possibly it was a unique situation.

Did you bid on priceline to get that rate, or did you choose the other option and accept a non bid deal that was advertised?

I agree with the others above about great hotel deals on priceline. I stayed at 4 star hotels several different times/diff locations for $60-$80 range when daily rate was above $150-$200 on hotel's web site. In my case I booked at least a week (or longer) in advance.

Hmm, that is interesting. I have not come across that situation ( higher price on consecutive days) before when using them, but will keep an eye out for it (and I have done it both ways bidding and advertised). On a side note we went back to the states for a funeral and I opted for pricelines insurance, like $11 a day ( since we are currently overseas and I am not positive on what our current insurance situation will cover...you know better safe than sorry...). When we got to the airport and picked up the car ( I was excited to see my sister so my husband went in to get it). I guess I didn't explain to him well enough that we bought insurance thru priceline and he thought it came with the car so Dollar added the $138 fee. I didnt realize this till we were dropping the car off and I asked the person doing the return about removing the charge and of course she was like sorry for your bad luck. I contacted priceline and they contacted Dollar. Dollar would not budge on the charge, however Priceline refunded us the money we paid thru them for the insurance. Not the resolution I wanted, but at least they tried and that goes a long way as far as I am concerned!
