Folks: It has been many years since I enjoyed this treat. It was at a tiny seafood place in a Cocoa Beach strip mall. But it was so good I cant stop trying to find it. Web search did not find much..

Anyone ever heard of and/or found a source for this tasty critter?

Its like snow crab but better and bigger (and 'local').

Thanks for any help..

Mike G

Interesting, I'm a FL native and I've never heard of it. you're not talking blue crabs or stone crabs, right? Cause that's what you're going to find around here.

I'm off to find it on Google...

Is this a Chinese restaurant dish (like "Firecracker Shrimp), or a species of crab?

Its a species.. Though it looks much like a Pacific Dungeness with a smaller body and a little lighter colored shell. The picture above is an unusually lage crab..another reason we dont see them much could be "turns out in the deep waters (300 to 2,000 feet deep) south of 28 north" On This side thats a LONGGGGGGGGGGG way out. 28 degrees N. puts ya around Tampa.

I cant tell you where to find it but I did find some info on the species.

Found in the deep, cold waters of the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic Ocean, golden crabs—named for the creamy-beige color of their shells—are large, nonswimming crabs with a lot of sweet, delicate meat. Interestingly, the species was officially discovered only in the 1980s, and quickly touted as a new commercial alternative to king, Dungeness, and snow crabs, which have suffered from overfishing in the past

checking on the NOAA fisheries web site shows that it is a limited fishery with only 11 permits issues. That's probably why you don't find them anywhere.
