I'd give it a shot again, it came a long way in the past few years....

Kodi (was xbmc) is great once you download all the add-ons you want (there is an endless amount of them, and it can be confusing at first). My only problem with using it on the laptop is that it doesn't have chromecast support and I don't feel like hooking up a long HDMI cable every time I want to use it. Actually I think they now have an add-on for Chromecast...but I'll give the stand alone box a try anyway.

I decided to go the cheap, simple, reliable- that comes with a good remote control option: I sideloaded Kodi (XBMC) onto an Amazon Firestick. I must say I am VERY impressed with what this little $40 doohickey can do. I've tried out most of my favorite add ons and they seem to work very well.

I may build a Raspberry PiII box next for another TV so I can compare the two.
