There were many good old radio programs long before TV. My mother from (HUNGARY) learned English listening to Stella Dallas ?and others of the like.As for me, I liked the LONE RANGER and TONTO (kiemasabe); The Shadow Knows (Lamont Cranston & Margo Lane); Fibber McGee and Molly; Jack Benny and Mary Livingston THE INNER SANCTOM (creepy) squeaky door opening; George Burns and Gracie Allen; "say goodnight Gracie" "Goodnight George". Oh, I remember we had to get our homework finished and then we would gather around the big floor model radio and turn the lights out...oh, that was another program, Lights Out.!!!! anyway, and then sit so close to the radio and listen to every word so quietly and allow ourselves to be scared and frightened at times. Fun remembories!!!

I was just a kid in the 1950s. We didn't have a TV so I listened to radio programs, of which many had been broadcasting since the 40s. I liked Fibber McGee, also Lone Ranger, and Johnny Dollar, but my favorite show was Suspense.

I remember those shows and also seen some audiotapes of the broadcasts for sale. Always liked the L-A-V-A commercials ~ mom and dad would get upset with me for running around the house repeating the name.

Some more old time radio.
I even listened to the soaps: Ma Perkins, Helen Trent ("can a woman over 35 ever find true love")
Also the comedies: Our Miss Brooks, My Little Margie.
The only radio commerical I remember is "you'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent".
Sticks in my mind, like the Burma Shave signs on every road in the country.

There's something about a show presented over the radio that is so much different than on TV. One's imagination is more actively involved. You picture characters in your mind. The gist of a scene is communicated through sounds, pauses, laughter, music.

I missed out on the era as tv was the latest thing when I was a kid. But have enjoyed modern day radio plays and comedy on CBC.
