Usually you can take pictures. Some of the mansions may not allow it though.

Are you allowed to take photos?
I'm no realtor or veteran; I'm only 14, but I've been going every year since 2000 to see the multi-million dollar mansions. (I want to be an architect, and it's always fun touring them.) They normally post the parade listings a few weeks before the parade on wake hba website, but builders will sometimes advertise their entries a few months ahead of time.

The biggest concentration of the mansions this year will most likely be in Hasentree, a subdivision in the North Raleigh/Wake Forest area. Then there are usually a bunch scattered throughout that area in subdivisions such as Linville, Chatsworth, Wakefield, and Devon. In Cary, your best bets are Preston, Birklands, and Rennaisance at Regency.

The majority of these neighborhoods are developed by creedmoor partners. Here's their website where you can find directions and information on the neighborhoods. Creedmoor Partners: Creating A Legacy of Luxury Neighborhoods

And here are a few links to what will most likely be this year's largest attractions.

As far as photos, they normally don't allow them in the huge homes, but it depends on the house. They'll have signs posted if they're not allowed.
But you can always sneak some from the outside.

And there's always the Durham/Orange county parade.

A warning about the Parade Of Homes...

Be prepared to feel depressed at the end of the day when you get back to your own home.

If nothing else viewing other homes may give you good design ideas for exisiting homes or possibly for homes that you intend to build.
