Hi there, we are relocating from Seattle and out here the dogs do not need heartworm medicine as it is not an issue here. They don't like to give it to dogs if not needed. If you have a dog- do you give them heartworm medicine along with flea\tick?

thanks in advance!

YES - Heartworm preventative is MUST here, year around. HW is transmitted via mosquito, and there is no month here that you would want to chance it.

Flea and tick preventative will be determined more by where you live and what is in that environment then anything. I live in Wake Forest, and typically dose my dogs w/ Frontline 1-2x over the spring/summer, but have friends who do so more regularly. I'd definitely increase this if my dogs began to experience fleas/ticks, but have gratefully been spared those issues (to date).

Welcome to NC!

My dog gets the heartworm shot. I do think heartworm meds are a necessity here in NC.

It's a very good chance your dogs will eventually get heartworms without prevention medication, and they'll be miserable without the use of Frontline or similar.

some folks don't realize cats can get and die of heartworms as well. Don't ask me how I know.

I buy our heartworm pills online, can't remember the pets site, but it's a name brand. I believe $20 for 6 months supply for a 70# dog. We used to use flea and tick but have stopped - completely - and our dog has had no ill effects just yet (that was years ago). Hope I don't jinx it. Looking up the ingredients in those things made my skin crawl. There are several natural ways to keep fleas and ticks at bay and/or deal with it, if it happens.

We got our first puppy this past February. I can't remember how many months old he was when he started his heartworm medicine. But our Vet knew we moved here from Oregon so he stressed that here heartworm meds & frontline are a must 12 months of the year.

Good luck with your move. Glad you are coming near the end of summer. It's cooled off enough it will be more comfortable for your transition. Our winters are definitely better than the PNW.
