Im sure this has been a topic before, but how is the health insurance for teachers? And what does it cost per month?

Wake County teachers get their insurance through the State Health Plan. All your questions can be answered on the website. Long story short, it seems like fairly mediocre coverage that is cheap for employees (~$0-20/month, depending on which option you choose), but expensive for spouses ($500-600/month) and children (~$200-300/month).

Surprisingly the roughly 1/2 million state employees on the plan seem to have little purchasing / bargaining power. BCBS owns the game, apparently.

My understanding is that while it is administered through BCBS and uses its network, it isn't actually a BCBS policy. Premiums and benefits are determined by the state and BCBS is contracted to process the claims. Were they to use a different insurer to process the claims, things would likely change very little.

This is correct.

The plan is not very good with deductibles and co-pays.

As said earlier, family coverage is very costly.

And that is exactly why the plan is in such trouble. The only spouses that get added are the ones with existing health issues or who are older and are more likely to use it. If you are healthy you can get the same level of coverage for about $200 a month depending on your age.
