I've moved into an apartment complex in Cary and after a few days noticed tons of small roaches everywhere. So, since I hadn't moved everything in I decided to move into another building unit within the complex. I hadn't had any issues for about a month and this past week I saw two full size adults. One in the kitchen, one in the master bedroom. I'm guessing this place is infested with them. Being from New England I've never had to deal with this problem. I'm looking for DIY info to keep them under control and a known local exterminator.

Thanks,

-M

I would encourage you to talk with your apartment manager to see if they have a regular extermination routine going on. You can have an exterminator spray your apartment and put out those little cockroach motels until the cows come home, but if the neighbors' apartments are infested, you will still have problems.

I would move. Fact that this is the second unit. Show the landlord cares nothing about the tenant. I maintain quite a few properties. From $1200 to the hood specials. Fact is that one thing all these owners understand. ROACHES ARE NOT A RENTERS OR OWNERS FRIEND!! They have pest guys scheduled for spraying to kill those spreaders of disease and anything else they have. One means hundreds. Two..... you have thousands that you do not see. MOVE!!!!! When you do look for those little dots in the cabinets, etc... If you see them move on to the next one.

The manager sends someone but he isnt very proactive. He will spot spray under the cabinets and put some gel, but thats about it. They will not schedule routine visits unless I visit the office and notify them I've spotted another.

The exterminator explained to me that they should not be of concern and one or two are known to roam indoors due to the weather change, but I am in disbelief.

I have had this problem in Raleigh with every apartment I lived in. They are probably the big outside wood or water roaches. Do you have leaves and trees up close against your apartment building? They seem to get worse when a lot of leaves/bushes are right up against the walls. When I was in an apartment, I found the best to control them was the regular apt exterminator and also putting out my own traps, and using the roach control white powder - sprinkle that across all entries into your apartment. If you're on the ground floor, go outside and put it around your window and door seams also. You can also use non-poison diatomaceous earth (this won't deter them but it does cause lots of holes in their soft underbelly which eventually kills them).

How do you deter them from coming in from the drain pipes? I think that's where they come from

I don't think there is a way to keep them from coming up the drain pipes. You could go get those metal mesh drop-ins for your sink/tub drains. They are meant to keep food from going down the drain. Maybe they would keep the bugs from coming up.

There are different kinds..One or 2 large wood roaches is not uncommon. They are the ones that come in from outside and do not set up housekeeping.

Smaller & German Cockroach means infestation and I wouldn't live there.
You will never control it in an infested complex.

You could take one in a container by one of the pest control places and find out which it is.

Exactly. I had a few of the large wood ones (they fly) come in when it got cold.

You will always get a few in older buildings. Use a gel or baits with the chemical hydrmethylnon. It kills the ones you can see and the ones you can't see. I have an older condo and I still see the occasional roach but 99% of the time it is dead.
