Oh yeah, we had those little guys too. Removing tree limbs which touched the roof helped a lot ...they were using them as little squirrel freeways. Also shrubs that touch the side of the house, that's bad too. We cut all the azaleas way back and keep them that way. We made sure to keep the bird feeder far from the house as well. That attracts squirrels almost more than it attracts birds!
I have noticed that the squirrels often seem to be drinking the water from the gutters. To lessen that attraction, of course, you have to keep the gutters clean so water doesn't pool up.
And yes, I must remember to knock wood when I crow about beating the mice. I know they'll be back...and I'll be ready!
