I noticed they are doing some serious remodeling on the old Border's Books location in Cary (Crossroads). Does anyone know what is planned for that spot?
I just got an email from REI - apparently the big move is happening this month:
Store Hours During the Move
Sunday, March 18: Current REI Cary location closes at 5pm.
Monday, March 19: Both REI Cary locations CLOSED for the move.
Tuesday, March 20: New REI Cary location opens at 10am.
New location:
1751 Walnut Street, Cary, NC 27511
(Located in the northwest quadrant of Highway 1 and Walnut Street at the former Borders site.)
Apparently the Crossroads store was REI's first location in NC, and opened 20 years ago. Interesting!
I look forward to checking out the new location, but not on the 20th! :-)
I drive by the new REI every day - looks nice, but that shopping center is a pain to get in and out of from certain directions. I'm not an REI shopper, but I hope it doesn't impact them too badly!

I agree about the ingress/egress points for that shopping center but I think the tradeoff will be in visibility-the current location is very poor in terms of drive by traffic. You could go to Crossroads 100 times and never find your way to the spot where they are now.
*tis rumored* (I overheard it at the customer service desk at REI) that they wanted a larger location than Crossroads; 3 days after they finalized the arrangement at the old Border's location, the Staples next to the current REI announced their departure (would have been easier for them to expand at the current location). But that's just what their guy told the customer in front of me
a bigger REI! Alright! Suburbanites rejoice! more NorthFace jackets to choose from!
I just came from NYC - everyone in that town wears North Face like they started the trend...it's quite funny.
