The city of Raleigh mailed letters to 4,000 people with unpaid parking tickets this week warning them that it will seize their tax refunds if they don't address the fines within 30 days. Raleigh has $1.6 million in unpaid fines since 2006.

Ok. Pay your parking tickets and STOP parking illegally. It's not rocket science.

Good on Raleigh going after dirt bags who refuse to pay their due bills. If you can't afford it, maybe Raleigh seizing your refund will cause you to think about it before you illegally park (including refusing to correctly pay for your parking space).

Nothing aggravates me more than seeing somebody park their piece of crap in a handy-cap spot to save 50ft of walking.

Parking fees and ticket fines used to be reasonable. Not any longer. They got greedy mostly because the city has all the extra expenses now. AS an example there is the ever increasing subsidy for the Convention Center.

I find it humurous when people park illegally then gripe about the fee.

Here's a tip: Don't park illegally downtown and you will never a get a ticket. I've managed to avoid parking tickets in downtown Raleigh for over 6 years and I park down there almost every day.

The point of high ticket fines is to discourage people from parking illegally in the first place. If the fine is only $10 you might not think twice about it, especially since in the past Raleigh has had a laissez faire attitude about collecting the fines (as evidenced by how much hasn't been collected over the years). Increase the fine to $50 and people start parking the way city wants them to. Go crazy like Duke and raise it to $100 and people start actively fighting the tickets any way they can. It's all about finding the balance between indifference and resistance.

What does the quality of their car have to do with them parking in a handicap spot?

I didn't say quality did I?

Park illegally and your piece of crap car (regardless of quality or brand) will be towed and you will be fined. I guess I should say you are a worthless piece of crap if you park your car illegally instead?

Yet another reason a lot of people don't go downtown anymore.

That, plus it's too crowded.

Am I missing the joke?

I'm not understanding why fines should be "reasonable".
