Hi, I was wondering what would be the most interesting scrap yards to find small engines, like lawnmower engines. I am tinkering in small engine repair and looking for something to restore. I know things have gotten more restrictive over the years, are there any scrap yards that allow you in the yard to explore?

hmm I know of junk yards in the area for cars but not smaller stuff. I bet if you posted on Freecycle that you're looking for a broken lawnmower for free someone would give you one.

Check J & D Recyclers in Durham, Fortress Metals in Durham & Wagoner's Salvage in Hurdle Mills. Also, post an ad on Craigs List.

There's LKQ but I think they are mostly car parts. Not sure, but here's their website: LKQ

I should have thought of this earlier. Simply post on Craigs List that you will pick up old mowers & other items free of charge. Many people have old mowers they want to get rid of. Same on Triangle Trader, a radio flea market show on 680 WPTF, Sundays 1 to 3. Check WPTF | 680 AM | 850 AM.
