Some of the nicest built-in shelves, bookcases, cabinetry, etc. for family rooms, home offices, and even kitchens I have seen were done by Alexander Custom Cabinetry @ 919-219-0353. Their skill in creating different "looks" and finishes is amazing.
For custom closets I recommend Carolina Closets. Great people and fantastic work! I believe they do built in's as well. We used them for the master closet and pantry, and will have them come out and visit the new house (whenever we get that done!)
I agree with mommiwrites. Carolina Closets Plus has a computer design system that controls the manufacturing in house locally so if you want to create a pantry or closet really unique to meet your vision, they can do it.
Capital Kitchens. I don't know if the address is Apex or Cary, but they are in the small commercial complex where Penny Rd and Ten Ten meet.
Ask for Daniel.
They do great work at reasonable prices.
I know the owner, Sue Pail. They do some great work. Let me know what you think...

I realize this thread is from 2007, but I didn't want to start a new thread -people search for companies to do work. We just used Closet Factory for closets and an entertainment center and they we were NOT happy at all. I am not a contractor, so I am basing my judgements on previous work we have done with Closet by Design and Carolina Custom Closets.
Compared to those 2 places, the workmanship was poor and the installers were very slow. It took forever to get everything installed, compared to just 1 day for Closets by Design. On top of that, multiple pieces installed in both places had cracks, poor MDF wood quality and chips. How did those pieces even leave the factory? After spending so much money on custom built-ins, this is not the level of service and quality I expected, especially if you can just go to another company like Closets by Design and get that service.
Now I'm wondering if I should write my experience on Google, Angie's List etc.
