I currently have a safe deposit box with Wells Fargo but I am in the process of opening accounts at Coastal Federal and closing my W-F accounts out. From what I understand Coastal doesn't offer safe deposit boxes. I wonder what other options there are for securing valuables off site.

Why not keep your box with W-F?

Depending on your current package at WF, you might have a discount on the safety deposit box that you would forego, but I think WF will be happy to rent you a box at list price even if you have no other account there.

One thing to note... some banks, including Wachovia, had modified the safety deposit box service so that people accessing the box did not have to sign in. If you had the keys, you could just walk into the vault (which they usually left open during bank hours) and get to the box. No record of access, and no validation of ID. If someone stole your keys, they could clean out your box and you would never know. WF changed the boxes back to ID validation and record-keeping. If you drop the WF box, ask your other prospective providers what kind of box access policy they have.

Some banks will not rent a safe box to non-account holders. You can always spend a few hundred on a home fire safe. Or find a bank that will rent just a box without opening an account.

Actually I didn't even think that WF would rent me the box once I told them I was closing all my accounts. Thanks for the insight, will call and ask.

Try First Citizens. I don't think they require you to keep an account there.

You could always keep a basic checking account there that you don't use for anything and consider the $7/month checking account fee part of the cost of the safe deposit box.
