My husband and I will be visiting Raleigh in September to check out a potential employment oppurtunity. We currently live in Florida, hve two dogs, no kids and really like living in a rural environment.
Are there some rural areas within driving distance? We would be looking to purchase a home on 5 or more acres if possible.
The thought of moving to a large city like Raleigh seems intimidating, but you all sound as friendly as my small town friends!

Thanks,
Driving distance to what? A certain part of Raleigh? How far do you consider reasonable driving distance? 20 minutes? 45? An hour? Responses will depend an awful lot on your answers to these questions.
Sorry. Driving distance from Cary area, I guess. We commute about 40 minutes from Orlando now, mostly highway driving. We will sacrifice travel time for a little more "country" environment.
There are places you can buy with 5+ acres. I have a friend who just bought 30 acres near Falls Lake, just a bit north of Hwy 98 North of Raleigh. It cost an awful lot of money, though. The farther you move from an area considered 'desirable', the cheaper the land will be. 40 minutes from Cary should land you in rural areas, which should be a lot cheaper than buying closer to the places where most folks live or work.
I think you could easily find something with 5 acres if you're willing to drive that far. Try Willow Springs, Angier possibly even Fuquay. Or you could look out east, Knightdale, Wendell, Zebulon. Lots of possibilities within that commute time. Pittsboro or Moncure to the West of Raleigh. It's a little prettier than the east side IMO.
I was going to suggest Fuquay Varina, as well - was just out there last week and amazed at how much land is still there (though I think it's grown quite a bit!). I think that area and off of Highway 401 might be something of interest? Good luck!!

Lots of rural land around here! You should be able to find something commutable to Cary or other parts of the Triangle no problem. Of course, it depends on your budget, too.
The Residence Inn in Cary is a good location in southern Cary. We've also stayed in the La Quinta and been comfortable there. Whole Foods is right around the corner so you can get a good meal of real food at their hot bar (or cook in your room if you stay at Residence Inn). There is also a Harris Teeter and Walmart next door with a really good bagel shop in that shopping center.
Be aware that we do have winter weather issues at times paralyzing the area.
If you must be available, living far out can be an issue if you practice in Cary.
