Fresh water fishing never really 'did it' for us. But where might be the closest place to go salt water fishing?

The closest would be near Wilmington. There are fishing piers at Kure Beach, Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach.
Charter boats are available in that area too for deep sea fishing.

For the BEST salt water fishing go out to the Outer Banks.

You can go surf fishing at any beach pretty much. Fishing piers are common at most beaches, too. For deep sea fishing there are charter boats all up and down the coast. Wilmington (Wrightsville, Carolina, Kure, Ft Fisher) would be closest.
