Yesterday I as leaving Chapel Hill and coming home to Clayton. My GPS took me 40 east and then to Wade Ave, which I think was 440? I've been here a year and am still learning the highways. It was stop & go, bumper to bumper forever. I left Chapel Hill at 6:00 PM. I only go out that way a few times a month, but have never encountered traffic like this. Was it the time of day? I just don't want to get stuck in that again-especially with a little one telling me "potty" from the back seat!

Sounds about right. That's why I take 751 from Chapel Hill during evening rush hour. No traffic unless you get stuck behind some granny going 10 under the speed limit. Then you just practice your Zen until you reach a clear passing zone

Not sure if that would be helpful at all for going to Clayton though.

yeah sounds pretty normal. 40 gets a little hairy like that during rush hours. going into raleigh it almost always gets backed up soon after exit 285 (often earlier too)

Travelling east on I-40 at the end of the work day puts you in the thick of the commute. Eastbound I-40 is congested most days from RTP travelling toward Raleigh.

(P.S. Wade Avenue is just Wade Avenue. It carries you from I-40 to I-440 on a short highway segment, but it's not part of either interstate.)

HAHA-yesterday on a street in CH, it was a Gramps and oh my goodness! when he turned my DH said it was like he was turning into his garage-he came to a complete stop and took the turn at a speed that wouldnt even register, lets just say a snail's pace!

Thanks!
I'll try to remember rush hour-not worth the complaining I had to hear from the rest of the family-and the fear of one of them having we pants (but he made it till we got home)!

My rule of thumb is to make it to the airport exits by 4:45pm. If I can do that, it's usually smooth sailing all the way, unless there is an accident.

Yep. I miss the days when I could leave my office by 4:15 most days. Now I'm usually leaving here around 5:30 and traffic is a hot mess.

Remember folks. Someday you will be an old Gramps or Granny with super careful driving habits so try to be a bit patient.

I don't know if this is a viable alternative or if it would be just as crowded, but I had to go to Selma on Sunday and drove right through Clayton. I live in the southern part of Chapel Hill and took Mount Carmel Church Rd/Farrington Pt. Road past Jordan Lake and then 64 East. Then you get on 40 near Raleigh and then 70 into Clayton. I didn't go at rush hour since it was a Sunday, but it was a nice ride and the initial estimated time was only 10 minutes longer than if I had taken 40 the whole way.

Yay or Nay? I'm pretty new around here, too.

I was going to say, eva mentioned 751, can't OP take that to 64 and that goes right to 40...not sure if that's doable and I don't drive the highways enough to be sure.
