Our neighborhood has a lot ofgarage dwellers also. Its for sure a southern thing as we never seen it in Nj. We have done it a few times for gatherings in the late fall when cooler...or rainy.....plus..the garage is more convenient to set up a t.v. forfootball games) .......but since we put in a inground pool the backyard is mostly our party spot.
We live in a mid price range neighbirhood in Clayton....and see it a lot in many surrounding neighborhoods. I have not seen it as much in higher priced neighborhoods ($400k +)
I have to agree with lamishra. It's not something inherent to this region, at least in my experience.
Is it the whole family or just guys? A lot of men use the garage as their escape cave. Or, if there's no porch, maybe it's their way of being semi-sheltered outdoors?
As long as they're not disruptive or causing any safety concerns, let 'em have at it.

I've been to numerous graduation and retirement parties where the buffet was set up in the garage. Seemed like a good way to keep the mess out of the house.
Can't say as I've seen folks just hanging out in their garage on a regular basis, but why not?
I see that more in several nice neighborhoods I drive through in North Myrtle Beach. I wish I had a garage to hang out in. Maybe stick a ping pong table out there...and a fridge
we can barely get our cars in the garage much less place to entertain and lounge.
