edit: The title should have read "but not cellular only"

We tried going cellular only last year, but husband is hard of hearing and it just didn't work well for us. So we have a TWC landline, and that's fine EXCEPT I'm seriously considering getting rid of TWC cable (their DVR is a dinosaur and now that they've shut off Showtime, I'm beyond pissed).

AT&T does not service our area, for anything. (Uverse would have been a no brainer, but they don't even offer land lines here in Brier Creek).

I'm almost certainly going to keep TWC internet (there really are no alternatives, I'm sad to say, and I do not have any complaints about the internet service).

So I'm open to VOIP if the quality and reliability is the same as TWC landline.

You realize that TWC is VOIP and not an actual land line? When TWC internet goes down so does your phone service.

Obi100 w/ Google Voice is free unless you want E911 then it's $12-$18/year
Ooma is a couple bucks a month, maybe $35/year-ish

Those are the two most popular cost conscious ones available. Both plug into your home phone.

I've been using Google Voice and the Obi100 for about 1.5 years with no issues

Yes already mentioned TWC is a voip. Vonage is as well. I have had both but now have Basictalk from Walmart. $9.99 a month. All 3 pretty much the same except Basictalk is the cheapest.

I am actually curious about whether it's even possible to get a hard wired landline anymore - I think Frontier offers? I've considered that since I work from home and have had my internet (and therefore my phone) go out during teleconferences. I just checked the Frontier site for my address though and they only offer digital phone.

What are we all going to do when the zombie apocalypse happens? I feel certain a hard-wired phone line will be useful.

NorasMom- don't get caught in the Marketing hype. We have a standard "landline" phone from Frontier so "digital" doesn't require the Internet for transport.
Hard wired, copper pair service based on TDM (digital) technology. No Internet required. Includes 911 service.
Remember to also have an old analog phone - copper also delivers the power to work the phone. But the copper twisted pair won't power speakerphones (some speakerphones have an analog base unit that will work).
You do need to be in a Frontier service area - legacy Verizon/GTE - basically Durham county and some adjacent areas

I know you don't want to hear about cell phone and I don't know what Bluetooth device you tried before, but we've had zero problems with Dock-N-Talk. If you used the phone at my house you would never know the difference between cell and a land line. Now you can't run fax machines and such, but it works great for phone service and you'll never miss an important call again since you take the phone with you when you leave the house.

Phonelabs - Dock N Talk, Universal cell phone Docking Station, cable and bluetooth enabled connection

Doesn't AT&T still offer POTS?

No, I didn't realize that. Then how can you have a TWC landline and not have internet???? They do offer that service. . .

I don't even know what POTS is, but AT&T offers nothing in Brier Creek Country Club.

We get too many dropped calls on our Verizon service to accept that, I'm afraid. And we found that we're just not into running across the house to grab the phone - we need 3 extensions.
