Looks like it is on a mid block crossing on SW Maynard between W Chatham and Old Apex. There are arms and lights there and its not right near a traffic light, so I wonder how it happened?

It is unusual. My husband heard the train whistle go off repeatedly this morning.

There are plans for an eventual grade separation of that crossing. That is the last crossing in town I would have expected there to be an accident like this. The ones at SW Cary Parkway, High House, and NE Maynard for example are way worse, where inattentive driving could easily leave you stranded on the tracks with nowhere to go.
There are more/better pictures on other new sites. The arms are down in those pics and the car is down the tracks only a little bit so it appears it was pushed there by the train. It seems to me that the driver tried to go around the arm and just didn't make it.
I just got back from the vets whose building is right next to this. The train was still there when I arrived but has since moved on. Rails were down, people said they heard the horn. It sounds like driver error. Such a shame
I do wonder if the driver was playing chicken with the train... or distracted. He was in the car with his girlfriend. I sure hope they weren't arguing. He'll need even more therapy if they were.

I really hate it for the poor Amtrak train driver. This has to feel just terrible, and nothing he could do to prevent it.
