I've searched this forum but haven't come up with a good bakery close to me. Can anyone recommend a good bakery for pastries and pies (not just cupcakes or birthday cakes) in the central/west Raleigh or more eastern Cary area? Thanks!
La Farm has very tasty sweet goods - croissants, some pastries, tarts. Fantastic bread (sweet and savory), of course. No pies. That's eastern Cary although they can also be found at the State Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings (sell out by afternoon) and the downtown market on Wednesdays in season I believe. They also have a bread truck that visits different places.
Yellow Dog Bakery - new shop right by PieBird (Peace St area, near the Krispy Kreme). I haven't managed to get in yet but a good friend loved it - a great high end coffee shop/bakery for pastries.
Piebird sweet pies are great but some are super-sweet!
Groovy Duck Bakery - tiny little bakery without good signage across from Harris Teeter/Bella Monica on Edwards Mill (next to UPS store). Got all my baked goods for Thanksgiving there and all were yummy. Great pies, the best shortbread cookies (the classic are yellow ducks but they do seasonal shapes as well. They are better and cheaper than the fancy ones at La Farm), tasty muffins, cakes as well. Definitely check them out!
Probably too far west for you, but Crema Coffee + Bakery has a small selection of delicious looking pastries and cakes. I've yet to try the baked goods (It is the only place I go for fresh roasted on-site beans) but will once I overcome my willpower. The bakery is owned/operated by a husband and wife team. The coffee is roasted by the owner of the Probat roasting machine. Kevin takes his coffee seriously.
If you've never tried the cakes at Hayes Barton Cafe in Five Points, you simply MUST. They sell them by the slice, quite pricey (I'm thinking $7 or something like that), but they are huge and it takes several days for 2 of us to finish a slice. The coconut cake is soooooo good. For pastries, NY Bagel in Crescent Commons in Cary.
If you're looking for decent Mexican bread there's a good one on Wilmington St. Lots of good Mexican sweet breads. They don't typically speak English so you know it's good.
