At least as far as Wake County goes, as well as at least one surrounding county. Before, you had to physically go to 330 S. Salisbury St. in Raleigh to the Wake County Sheriff's Office to file the application, then go back after a week's time to pick up the permit. City driving and parking is for the birds.
I recently learned of the online application process. I submitted an app for 2 permits, was approved the next day (they call, email and text) and that's only with a $3 convenience fee on top of the $5 for each permit sought. You do, of course, still need to deal with the hassle of visiting the Sheriff's office to pick up said permits. But the front end is now SOOOO much easier. I'm not sure how long they've offered this, but if this is news to just one of you, I've done my good deed for the day.
I got mine about 3 months back. At that time they were backed up and it took about 3-4 weeks but were going to add more manpower. Online is certainly more convenient. Got a concealed carry also and was told 90 days but it came through in less than 40.
And for those who have been there before, they have moved the office down to the first floor, just off the lobby. With restrooms as well!
There was a bit of a comical note too. I was 3rd in line at the window, and the 3 of us had to wait 10 minutes while the clerk was out back having a cigarette.
I'm sorry to hear that. I would hope it would be much harder.
Why would you want to make it harder to get a background check by the Sheriff? You still have to go through a federal background check once you buy a pistol.
You could just get your concealed carry permit (more expensive I know) which lasts for 5 years and then you can buy all the handguns you want without a pistol permit. I've had mine for a little over a year even though I rarely carry on my person and I have yet to buy a new gun in 10 years. I like having the option of taking it with me when I need to though.

In my haste this morning I did not carefully read the title. I missed "application" and saw only that is was easier to get a pistol permit. I'm still reeling from the massacres all over this country and while I believe we should be able to buy guns, I think it should be made harder and take longer to thoroughly check out every potential gun purchaser.
