Hate to say this, but the best pre packaged crabmeat I've had in years was from BJ's. Don't know the price as I had that luxury at a friend's dinner party. Better than the crabmeat I've had in restaurants. YUM.

I'd probably go to Weaver Street if you want local NC crab. You might try Tom Robinson's seafood, too. Tom died a few years ago, but I think his partner is still keeping it going. I haven't shopped there so I don't know. Weaver Street gets seafood from Core Sound Seafood. They deliver once or twice a week I believe. Weaver Street Market - Core Sound Seafood

You might also check out the Carrboro Farmer's Market. Sometimes there's a guy set up at the Citgo with fresh seafood from the coast. Don't know if he would have crab or not. I have definitely seen it at Weaver Street.

Don't have an idea on price, but probably not too cheap if you're buying the local stuff.

I saw some at Tom Robinson's about 2 weeks ago. I think they're only open Thurs-Sun? It was in a clear container like we purchase when we're at the beach. No idea of cost of freshness....

Locals Seafood is another option, they are at the Chapel Hill Farmers Market as well as other farmers markets. You can pre-order through their web-site. They are charging $35/lb for jumbo lump. I have never bought crab meat from them but everything else that I have gotten has been excellent!

You can get a lb of jumbo lump crab meat for $21 at Costco (although it's Durham, not Chapel Hill) - not local but a great price.

Check out Weaver Street before you go to Costco. I don't know the prices, but it's local and good. Costco — who knows where it comes from? China? Thailand?
