You could also get a VPN or proxy service and use an international stream [Canada (CBC), the U.K. (BBC), Ireland (RTE) or Australia (SBS)].

I use an old laptop with a TV tuner (similar to this) and Windows Media Center. Connected to my TV, it makes a great DVR.

I laughed at your response; however, this is very clever! Well done!

I've never used either, but the SiliconDust and Simple.TV devices show-up on woot fairly frequently.

Personally, having used only OTA TV for years now, if I miss a show I just stream it on hulu or the network's site.

Well that's true. And someone could also capture the baseband video/audio (whatever the source) and restream it for their friends. But that's violating ToS.

Hold up a convenience store one time and you're likely to get away with it. Hold up the same store ten times and you're likely to get caught.

There is NO need to pay more for a "digital" or "HD" antenna. Any old fashioned antenna works just fine with HD TV. Even better, are the old aerial ones you put on a pole and had above your roofline. Any indoor antenna will have limitations. I have several indoor antennas that I used several years ago, amplified, or simple rabbit ears, there is little to no difference.

If you REALLY want to cut your ties to cable, satellite, etc then go buy yourself one of those roof mounted antennas. I can get between 22-30 over the air stations with simple rabbit ears. But unless I simply can no longer afford it, I will not ditch my pay TV service.

I live in North Raleigh (Lynn and Creedmoor Road area) which is a reasonably high elevation area of Raleigh - which helps TV reception I'm sure. I use a Channel Master 4228HD 8-bay antenna mounted in the attic aimed toward the WUNC tower and use RG-6 coax cable to a single TV. If I used a splitter, I wouldn't get so many channels. The channels I get well are:

2-1 and 2-2
4-1, 4-2 and 4-3
5-1 and 5-2
11-1, 11-2 and 11-3
17-1 and 17-2
22-1 and 22-2
28-1
30-1, 30-2 and 30-3
44-1
40-1, 40-2,40-3 and 40-4
47-1, 47-2, 47-3, 47-4, 47-5 and 47-6
50-1 and 50-2

One solution for Aloupha for watching the world cup games might be to watch them on 40-2 (Spanish) and get the audio off the internet.

The roof mounted antenna won't work for me. I will be living in an apartment complex on the second floor. So, this won't work.

Even though I can afford it, I just do not want to pay such a huge about of money for cable tv.

Thanks. What are those channels?

I will be in North Raleigh as well (27615 zipcode).
