Can anyone recommend a company for this? Also any idea what it costs? I've tried calling a few places over the last year and have never gotten a call back. This is a roughly 8x8 small basement bathroom.
You can also just cover it up. We had 1/4 inch drywall installed over our popcorn.
Thanks. It's actually getting moldy because of the humidity in the bathroom. We have bought a dehumidifier and are keeping the humidity levels low, but the mold is unsightly and I want it gone. I don't like the idea of covering it up even though we've sprayed it with a biocide.
You can send a sample of the popcorn ceiling material to this lab in Cary to have it tested. They used to only charge $25 for residential customers but you may want to give them a call first since it's been a few years since I used them. Asbestos FAQ | CEI LABS, Inc.
Even if the material has small trace amounts of asbestos, you can still do the work yourself if you take the necessary precautions but I agree that the mold should not be covered up. In fact it may be worth the cost to completely remove the old bathroom ceiling to install a proper ventilation system to alleviate the moisture problem and then replace the ceiling using new drywall since it's such a small area.
Last I checked into this it was fairly expensive...roughly 1500-2k per 1000 sq ft if that offers any insight. They need to scrape it, then smooth it out/fix imperfections and paint it.
Is putting drywall over it a cheaper or more effective solution?

Gently chip off a piece and get a mail-in asbestos test at home depot or lowes for like $50. Then you will know what you are dealing with. If it comes back negative, you can just tear it out. Not all popcorn ceilings are made the same.
Thank you for all in the suggestions. I'm not positive it's asbestos but the house was built in '61 and from what I understand it is very likely because of the year.
Cover it with drywall. The mold will not continue to survive if treated with fungicide and moisture levels are controlled. Spray it down with Concrobium just prior to installing the drywall and then it will be completely encapsulated with the mold dead. Removing with asbestos removal is way more trouble than killing some mildew. It is very likely to be asbestos at that age.
We're are you located sir if in the Dfw area I'm a asbestos contractor and I could take a look at it for you
