This is a question I've never found the answer to. Does anyone know what the building located in west durham county is and why it is not located in downtown durham ? Its a good-looking skyscraper, probably the tallest one in the city, glass with a white rod on top. For some reason, my computer wont load pictures on here from flickr so if you need to see the picture, type in durham skyscrapers, the title of the picture is DSC05840. Any info to end this mystery of mine would be helpful, thanks.

That's University Tower. BCBS-NC is there, Duke Medicine and a host of others. It's owned by Emporis I believe.

University Tower, Durham

The "official" name is the Pickle Building. Or some call it the Rocket Building.

I was going to say the same thing, the pickle building! I have been to a couple of different wedding receptions there, they have them on the top floor, and you get a great view of durham and chapel hill...........

It's the University Club on the top floor. My high school reunion was there. It was shwanky!

Ah.... good ol Pickle Building. I've never heard it called anything else. Someone could've said "university tower" to me and I would never have guess that's it's official name!

At 365', it is Durham's tallest building and was completed in 1986; the architect was Durwood Pickle, hence the nickname. However, we still haven't answered the original question about why it is located 5 miles outside of downtown Durham. Was there an attempt in the 80s to create a mid-town area around the tower?

I wondered about that too. I like that building, it helped me find my way home the first couple of months I lived here!

My guess is it was cheaper to build there. It's also right on 15/501 with easy access to 85 and within minutes to 40.
