Yep, talk to your neighbor nicely first and see what kind of compromise you can work out. Some towns do have a noise ordinance law and sometimes they specify hours of quiet. But either way, your neighbor should work with you on acceptable times that her son can practice and play.
BTW, do you own or rent? If you rent, it's something you can take to your landlord if you are unable to work out a compromise on your own.
