Fun little article with an obvious level of subjectivity. However, being a music lover, I find Raleigh (specifically the entire triangle) to be more than adequate.
Hahaha...lists Richmond, VA as punk rock capital of east coast then proceeds to list a bunch of artists associated with Richmond that are vehemently hated by punks, if even known by them at all.
Congrats to Raleigh. Personally, I spent a lot of time and money on great bands from these parts.

Yes, they should have included the entire Triangle. Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro and even Booth in Cary often have a lot of great bands.

Also pretty funny that they list the Oak City 7 as one of the highlights of the Raleigh music scene. This year, it was nothing but tribute bands! Not exactly the mark of a vibrant music scene.
I think the list is a pretty good one. The bands listed for the cities seem to miss the mark but the towns are great ones for live music. For Richmond in particular, the glory days of Richmond punk are over but what exists here today ( hip hop, jazz, funk, art rock, no wave, post punk, alt country) is far and away better (better production, better craft, greater depth and variety).
While I think Raleigh does have a great music scene, I think the article is totally bunk. (Not sure what Robert Plant's ties to Austin are, but his accent definitely "ain't from around here". And I always thought drive by truckers were from Muscle Sholes, AL., Not sure on that one)
I don't know that we deserve #2, but I do think we have a good music scene here, so in the end, I guess that's what's important.
You're right about the DBT, and I'm not sure what Dave Matthews' connection with Seattle is supposed to be (he's from South Africa and the band formed in Charlottesville, IIRC).
What is the best concert you have seen in the Triangle?
For me, I would say the Dead at the Dean Dome in '93 is the tops.
As for runners up:
Rolling Stones this summer was great.
Roger Waters: The Wall was amazing back in 2012.
Recently, I have been more into smaller bands at smaller venues.
Lotus at the Cats Cradle
Tauk at Lincoln Theatre
