RALEIGH - Holly Springs residents pay more in local taxes and fees than those of the Triangle's other cities and towns on a per-person basis, according to a report today from a conservative political organization.
Taxes and fees in Holly Springs amounted to $2,424 per person in 2006, the John Locke Foundation said in the report.

According to the Locke Foundation, the per person tax burden in other towns amounted to:

- $2,198 in Morrisville;

- $2,055 in Chapel Hill;

- $1,991 in Durham;

- $1,976 in Cary;

- $1,945 in Hillsborough;

- $1,935 in Carrboro;

- $1,891 in Knightdale;

- $1,875 in Wake Forest;

- $1,866 in Fuquay-Varina;

- $1,816 in Raleigh

- $1,795 in Clayton;

- $1,771 in Garner;

- $1,754 in Apex;

- $1,685 in Smithfield;

- $1,642 in Wendell;

- $1,566 in Siler City; and

- $1,355 in Selma.

Among cities with at least 25,000 residents in 2006, the report ranked Chapel Hill's tax burden second -- behind Charlotte -- followed by Durham at No. 5, Cary at No. 6, Raleigh at No. 11, and Apex at No. 15.

The report also found that taxpayers are devoting a larger portion of their personal income to city and county government -- with the median rising from 4.65 percent in 2005 to 4.75 percent in 2006.

In Durham County, taxes and fees amounted to 6.47 percent of personal income; in Wake, 5.09 percent; in Orange, 4.95 percent; in Johnston, 4.9 percent; and in Chatham, 3.69 percent.

The report is based on data from the state treasurer, the Census Bureau, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Also, the electric co-ops in many smaller towns charge outrageous rates compared to Progress Energy.

We just don't have the business tax base yet in Holly Springs...but that is slowly changing...especially with Walmart & Novartis coming in. But who knows if they will actually lower our taxes...probably not...

Hmmm ... I smell some funny math here. But I don't know all of the details, so I don't know for sure.

I think that it's important to put this information in perspective. You can get much more house for your money in Holly Springs than you can in, say, Cary. Even with the higher tax rate, you're virtually guaranteed to spend less for the same property in Holly Springs than in many other communities. Granted, you'll probably have a longer commute, too, but for some people it is worth it - even from a financial standpoint - to buy there.

Just a thought.

I live in Florida, so I don't understand what taxes you are speaking about?
Are these personal property taxes? Or Home Property taxes?
