I am trying to decide if I should move to Detroit or Raleigh. Has anyone ever lived in both and pehaps compare the two for me? I'm having a lot of trouble finding info. on Detroit (Canton area) since there is no one in the Michigan forum. (Pehaps that should tell me something) I currently live in Carmel, IN and am looking for a change. I am open to just about anything, except that I would like good schools for my 2 children.
Raleigh for sure!!!! I have lived in Michigan and there is just no comparison. Winters in Michigan are long, dreary, wet & gray......In NC you can have 70 degree days in January, and the sun shines almost all the time when it's not raining. It's unusual to have overcast days.
I'd say go for NC!!!! Lots more to do in neighboring states, & the weather is much nicer.
I grew up in Detroit Suburbs about 15 minutes from Canton. In fact I used to Pheasant hunt there before it was developed.
Canton is a great very new city. Kind of built from the ground up in the last 15 years. One of the many waves of white flight, which keeps expanding the Detroit Suburbs. Definitely upper middle class. Great schools shopping etc.
I lived in NC for 12 years, although not Raleigh.
If you want a change, then I don't know if Detroit really qualifies based on where you live now. Also, the economy in Detroit is in tough shape with all the Big Three layoffs. If you get a great job then it is a great place to live. But, probably not that different than where you are now.
Raleigh is fairly progressive, as the South goes. You may not have much of a problem with the transition culturally. I always said that Indiana was the most Southern of the Midwestern States.
The smaller towns and rural areas are where you find the most resistance to Yankees.
Thanks for the replies. I was looking at homes in Raleigh and wondered if most are built with basements or not? In the area I live in now the water table is high, so builders won't build a basement in all homes.
Adream: Carmel schools are probably the best in all of IN. The main reason I want to leave is because of the way the Indianapolis area is set up. All stores and restaurants are located on the same road. (82nd street and now 37 in Noblesville) if you are familiar with the area. And after they closed the malls on the East and West sides of Indy that only leaves the North or South ones (30 miles apart) to go to, unless you go downtown. The traffic is ridiculous if you want to go out to eat or just run an errand. I don't mean to rant. Most people will like the area if you don't eat out or shop at all.
Hopefully, Raleigh is not set up with all retail located one street.
