I've only been to that mall once since I've been here. It feels like a smaller less impactful South Point. Like it has no identity of its own to make it stand out.

Exactly. It's always felt sterile and impersonal to me. It looks built cheap like they just went with the most basic mall furnishings. There isn't any unique at architecture or destination store or activities. Very blah. Their opening food court was disappointing as well. Lots of off brand versions of typical chains. I'd rather have the chains instead of a higher price off version between the two. Cary mall is starting to incorporate food trucks into their court. That would be worth trying at TTC eventually.
The idea originally was it was supposed to mix elements of nature and the terrain of NC into the design of the mall. The man-made creek that was to flow through and rock formations used for art and seating. Seems like they incorporated a little bit of the motiff to say they did it .But it was so minimal it never really developed any interest or appreciation. I bet half the people whose been there never even realized that was the look they were going for.
When TTC opened, it had a few amenities that Crabtree did not... comfortable places to sit (instead of metal benches), restaurants above fast food (Crabtree had pushed its restaurants out, aside from the food court). But Crabtree rose to meet the competition, and TTC seems to have declined slowly but steadily since the day it opened.

I agree. When it opened, it also had some stores Crabtree and Southpoint didn't but those seem to have closed or moved. One of my favorite stores, United Colors of Benetton (I know it's not exactly trendy any more, but I love it) opened a store in TTC, but eventually it "moved" to Cameron Village only to have that store close and move to Southpoint.
I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but TTC has always seemed to have trouble (self-caused or not) with it's anchors. For a while, wasn't it the only Macy's in the area? Then I believe one opened up somewhere else. And it had a Hects (sp?) in the beginning too, but that company was bought out by another (I think...) and that spot was empty for a bit.
FWIW, TTC's plight has always reminded me of what's happened to Cary Towne Center in the past few years but CTC seems to be a little farther down the slump but at least actively trying different things to keep up, like having the Dave and Busters.

Older malls feel like tombs to me. They are depressing and no one wants to spend money freely in that environment. You blow cash when you shop somewhere with energy and life. Seeing other people shopping and having fun. Herd mentality in full effect. Who gets the shopping bug when your passing by empty stores and senior citizen mall walkers?
Let's put it this way. TTC is so dead that they are able to operate a children's train through the main thouroughfare without obstruction. You can't do that at a busy active mall.
I also feel it has almost more kiosks then actual stores. I'm probably wrong but I leave with that impression, none the less.

Wow, you guys had Hecht's down here? I didn't realize that. Hecht's was a DC-area company. They got bought out my Macy's some years ago. Hecht's was always my go-to store when I lived in DC.

Yup. Everywhere you see a Macy's here is a former Hecht's store.
And, Hecht's was far superior. Macy's doesn't consider this area one where we get their higher-end lines. Or, rather, little to no real selection in them.

I am shocked at how unappealing the clothing at Macy's North Carolina stores is. There are some crappy Macy's in the DC/NoVA area too, but at least there are some upscale Macy's to choose from, such as the ones as Tyson's Corner II or Pentagon City.

This explains a lot. I've never been in a Macy's outside of NC (visiting malls while traveling has just never come up) so I've always been a little perplexed by people who just lllooovveee Macy's, talk about how great everything is there, how it's one of the higher caliber stores, etc. Guess this is just because our Macy's doesn't get the "good stuff" so it doesn't seem any better than the other regular mall anchor stores we've got.
