I am sorry to see that the N&O has now moved to the paid subscription. All my high school sports stories will have to be found only at High School OT from now on.

I'm still able to read news stories - not that I really ever go to their page. Maybe because I'm not signed in?

I think it's older stories. You'll get annoying popups that prevent you from actually reading the story.

I deleted my favorite for them. Not a huge loss for me.

I was about to type the same thing. I clicked on about 5 news stories and it didn't ask for a subscription.

Maybe only certain stories require subscription?

It went to subscription a long time ago. You can get a certain number of stories for free every 30 days.

I'm ok with it - but that's because newspapers need money to pay reporters who are forever being laid off. We need good journalism more than ever - I let my Herald Sun subscription lapse ... will probably renew... might kick in for the N&O as well.

The paywall only shows up if you are a frequent visitor and read a lot of stories. They have to make money somehow, now that paper subscriptions have gone down. There are many hard working people at the N&O and it will be a sad day when/if the paper goes under.

While we DO need good journalism more than ever, I've watched the N&O slowly slide into obscurity over the last 17 years as a subscriber.

The main reason, at least for me? The fact that they have gone away from having a lot of local reporters. After McClatchy acquired the N&O Publishing Company in 1995, the focus has been more about cost control than strong local reporting. Open this morning's paper, and you'll see a lot of "local stories" from reporters who are anything but local.

Unfortunately, there really isn't enough money left in the journalism game to warrant a strong local base of reporters. But it's shocking that the nation's 10th most populous state (and soon to be #8) does not warrant additional local reporters in the state capitol.
