I wish there were a middle ground...this is something, as a yankee, I find so difficult to deal with. In business, anyway. It just drives me up the wall. I don't want someone to be offensively blunt, either, but "direct" can be a very good thing! I'm adjusting...slowly...because I'm here...but in the workplace I definitely still prefer the northern ways.
Now, I do agree with you in that regard--I grew up here, but I still get frustrated having to have a 10-minute conversation about what I did this weekend, when all I want to know is when the budget numbers will be ready! ;-)

We moved here a little over 3 years ago, and although we haven't made a lot of social connections (no kids, no church, work from home, no other family in the area, etc) everyone we have run into has been wonderful. One thing that really makes me happy is the diversity I see here. I know a lot of other people from up north where I'm from (NYC area all my life) think that the SOUTH is prejudiced, segregated, redneck-y, backward, etc. and lacking any semblance of culture.
That attitude could not be further from the truth. I have found it to be exactly the opposite. There is so much to do here culturally... I've seen more big name acts than I ever did in the NY area. The restaurants are top notch. A recent trip to Jibarra with a friend who lived in San Francisco was amazing, she was shocked and said she "had to go to Raleigh to get good Mexican food!" Ditto Sushi Blues, Bu-ku, etc. And more than anything, I love seeing integrated couples. I've never seen so many white men with AA women. That is where prejudice will end... when love transcends pigment.
I love it here. I wish I had more friends locally and I do miss my family up north, but it really seems like the triangle is indeed the best place to live.
I have read many concerns from people thinking about relocating to the Triangle area, regarding how they may be accepted. Will I be accepted if I am a northerner, if I am from another country, if I am of one ethnic group or another, if I arrive bringing with me a pot of gold from a house sale in a different part of the country.
Well, let me tell you.........
I moved to NC from MA and lived originally in Durham and now in Cary. I have worked in Raleigh and now in RTP (Durham). I have worked and associated with people of all ethnic groups, from all parts of the world and with true blue southern people. I have never been treated better in my life. I have been welcomed with open arms everywhere I have been and treated like family. There is absolutley no truth to rumors that southern people resent northerners for invading their territory. People love my accent.......not that I think I have one. The people in this area are the kindest people I have ever met.
If you are in fear of relocating because of how you may be treated, fear no more. I am so glad that I did not listen to what people from the north told me would happen when a "yankee" moved south. It's been great!
nice to here thank you for posting. We're coming from crapy MA as well, and really looking forward to it
