Know the value of your car, know the good price for the car you want (many website show what people are paying), bring a check for the difference already filled out. Done and out in 2 hours (accounts for paper work). I've also bought cars without trade-ins and let them know money could be wired after a phone call. They like less paper work and you can work that to your advantage.
I don't see why people stress out. Either they're unprepared or they have unreasonable expectations. Research, research, research, then talk to a dealer.
Not everybody has the personality to research things. If you have ever take a DISC test it's the C personality and it's what engineers are. Im partial C so I can research when I need to but I wont get bogged down in the numbers and will make a quick decision.

Tax issue very true. However, another deal had Leith Honda beat Carmax's bid.

Interesting...I'm an engineer and I research quite a bit before I by anything over $1k. Maybe that's why I don't mind the whole car buying routine.

Search for disc test, it's free to take. Understanding different personality types helps me to deal with people more effectively. One thing I noticed is most spouses have different personalities because opposites really do attract. It's why some people love going to Carmax. Since there is no negotiating it caters to that personality.
If you are looking to sell a car check out Carvana. I posted earlier in the thread but wanted to reiterate how awesome it was. If you have your vin you can get a price from your computer in two minutes. Way easier than going to Carmax and waiting around.
I've sold two cars to Auction Direct on Glenwood. Both times they offered $1000 more than CarMax. Had to come back the next day for the check, but each was a quick and painless process.
Estimates from both places are good for a short amount of time/mileage, so you can shop around and compare. Recommend that you schedule an appraisal time before going to avoid having to wait.
