Oh also check out https://www.sharetheridenc.org/ to find carpool partners. I entered in Chapel Hill to Greensboro and found 23 matches (either people doing a similar route or people who could pick you up on the way from Raleigh)

That's because they're set up to serve people coming from the west to Chapel Hill who live in their actual service area (which doesn't include Orange or Durham Cos). So they technically are set up for the most common work hours, but for a different set of folks.

I wish working from home (at least a few days a week) was more of an option for those with long commutes

Move where you work or work where you live.

When I worked in Manhattan, we got in a middle income project and walked to work.

Long commutes aren't worth the drain on your health and life,

Right. OP already explained that they can't take their daughter out of a good school. And we're not in Manhattan.
