Rush hour. Why on earth would these cyclists WANT to ride at rush hour is beyond me. Rush hour??

I don't necessarily agree with you about some of the stereotypes in your post but I do agree with this statement. I've been in group rides with all kinds of cyclists - they're are definitely bad apples in each group that go out of their way to be annoying.

Apologies if I've missed another post you were referring to.

I rode bicycles during rush hour to get to and from work - not every day, but when I could. Here, Washington D.C., Los Angeles and San Jose California.

I also rode for errands such as grocery shopping.

No pelotons or group riding for me, I'm not interested.

I hope that the fellow commuters got used to me in their midst, and recognized that I followed the rules and appreciated respect when I received it (such as making room for me to make a left turn, for example, because some of them KNEW that's where I needed to turn). As a driver, I also knew where their driving trouble-spots were, and purposefully gave a lot of leeway to drivers in order to not hold them up. I suspect many bike commuters do so - no, not all.

Now retired, I ride an electric-assist bike during off rush hour times.

Bicycling, for me, is a fresh-air hobby.

Where's your evidence for this? Or are you just making things up?

The demographics of NIMBY's in Cary and other places match up closely with the demographics of those who purchase $500+ Specialized and Cannondale bicycles from REI, The Bicycle Chain and the like. Unless you're suggesting that the cyclists (the bad apples) who hog up the road are riding WalMart/Target bikes, and my assumptions about NIMBY's are all wrong

More like $1500+ bikes. $500 is the price of a new entry level bike. Believe me the people who have lower priced hybrids instead of carbon fiber bikes are not the people you're complaining about. (I don't have enough money to throw on a $2000 bike haha)

I'm challenging your statement that cyclists are NIMBYs.

Agreed. Cyclist represent a fairly accurate cross section of society. Rich/Poor, White Collar/Blue Collar, City/Country, Old/Young, Dem/Rep, Kindhearted/A-hole, HotRodder/PriusDriver, Drinker/T-Totaler, etc...

I think there is no evidence to support the claim you quoted. It's just another generalization reflecting THAT PERSON's view of a group of people they know nothing about.

500-1500 dollar bikes? Maybe 20 years ago. Most decent bikes now are $3k -12k.

Any bike shop paying rent will tell you that $1,500 is "entry level" in bicycles.

These aren't commuters. I'm talking about the massive groups I encounter almost every day on the road at rush hour. Dozens of cyclists clustered in a massive peleton, clogging up the road during the busiest times of the day. Surely they must know that this does nothing but tick off most drivers. It may be their legal right, but it's stupid and dangerous. Some impatient driver is going to cause an accident getting around them.
