Over reaction. Kids do things, especially boys, and sometimes get hurt. Whether it be king of the hill on monkey bars, back lips off swings, shooting each other with BB guns, sled riding... all things I have done as a kid. It's what boys do. Sometimes kids break things or themselves.
Technically, as the owner of the property with the trampoline, you are most at fault here. I'm not sure why you are fixated on an apology. What difference does it make? For all we know, the neighbor may be upset with you for allowing their child on the trampoline. And if it was an accident, why the need to apologize? It's not the same as being sorry that your child was hurt. I think there are two reasonable conclusions to come away from this:
1.) These things happen. It's the price of having fun.
2.) Trampolines are dangerous and this was bound to happen.
I had a trampoline as a kid and teenager and it was awesome. But I did break my brothers hand and hurt a friends neck. We had different ideas about safety back then than many people do now. I don't think anybody ever apologized. I think everybody understood, when you get on the trampoline, that's the risk you take.
Did the other parent know they'd be playing on a trampoline? They may be upset that they didn't know.
