Hello, everyone. I have an unfinished attic and during this year's yellow pine storm it got a pretty good dusting. I have typical gable vents and the attic screens are good but this was not enough. I am trying to find a solution where I can close off the vents for these two weeks (storm screens, electric shutters) but nothing seems reasonable as these areas are hard to access. I can handle cleaning the pollen outside the house and what gets in the kitchen downstairs, etc., but if you've seen an unfinished attic you know how nearly impossible it is to clean. I am still finding it up there! Any suggestions? Thank you.

Get something similar to furnace filter media and put it over the gable vents and between rafters/trusses near the heels and baffles to filter soffit inlet air.

Heck, if your rafters are 16" o.c., 14" furnace filters might just be the ticket.
Buy cheap and cut them in half to get two bays done for the price of one cheap filter.

Theoretically air should be pulled through the soffit vents and out the gable vents (I think?). Maybe I'm thinking of the ridge vent.

Either way, it's going to be tough to prevent pollen from coming through the soffits.

Thank you, Mike. I checked it out and that could work.
And I will also check for other incoming vents, m378.

I appreciate the responses

Do you have a vent at the top of the roof peak? If you do, you might also want to put a filter there.

I never noticed pollen in any attic that we have had, but it does get dusty up there. I would cover up things that you don't want dusty and call it done. Don't store anything in an attic that can't take the heat. It can get super hot up in some.

Are you referring to the ridge vent? Air goes out the ridge vent - I think it's unlikely pollen would come in there. And putting a filter on a ridge vent would be difficult.

Quality ridge vent has a filter membrane inside.
Bugs and such, you know?
