I will be moving to the Raleigh area this summer from NJ and I'm moving out of my parent's house so I have no furniture of my own. Any suggestions on furniture stores down there that are reasonable (on a teacher's salary) to get a kitchen table and chairs, couch, bed etc. for a decent price and nothing too modern.

If you have time, try driving to High Point, NC. You talk about furniture..........sheesh, that's a lot of furniture.
Just take a drive on Glenwood Ave, there a tonnes of furniture stores. There are the typical Rooms to Go and Room Store that have reasonable furniture at a reasonable price as well as some local stores and some higher priced. There is a good clearance store; home comforts clearance store, and they have some bargains in there sometimes.

Don't rule out Craigslist for furniture-the transient nature of our area creates a lot of almost new furniture that folks either choose not to move when leaving or find they can't utilize in a new space. Some REAL bargains there.

Very good suggestion. It's really hit or miss there, but one thing is constant - very good quality mattresses that are cheap. Most of them are new but from showrooms, so they're a little scuffed up. We bought a mattress for $495 that would have retailed for about $1100 - the only difference being no warranty and a few scuffs that get covered up by bedding anyway.
Nice people that run it, and the delivery is very quick and reasonable in terms of price.
Try the Home Comfort Clearance Center on Glenwood. You can get pretty decent looking stuff at good prices there.
