The news pumped up the story by stating "RDU makes a major annoucment....". Such a disappointment when I learned about Spirit. I was hoping it was going to be an international flight and a 747 would be used.

Dream on. None of the USA based airlines even use the 747 anymore. (which makes me sad. I liked that plane a lot.)
Spirit is awesome if you massively temper your expectations.
If you go on expecting a Dollar Store experience its fine. If you expect to travel as you're accustomed to with Delta or American or whatever, not so much.

I don't understand how anyone goes in expecting the same experience as an airline that's 4 times the price. Isn't that just common sense?

We fly Delta and American mostly during the summer. I don't know how much worse any other airline can be? They all just pack you in, give you a drink (easier to bring your own) and maybe a pack of crackers. Why would Frontier or Spirit be much worse?
Frontier has a direct flight to Jacksonville, FL, which would be great to get my grandson back and forth!

They nickel and dime you and you need to read up on the fees ahead of time, but...
I would compare Delta or AA to shopping at Target, and Spirit to Big Lots or Dollar Tree. You think they're the same, but they're not, really.

The problem with budget airlines, as mentioned either in this thread or the other thread, is delays and cancellations are more frequent. Some of these flights are only twice a week, so a cancellation means you're sitting for days - they're not going to put you on a flight on another airline.
These airlines are meant for those that have flexible schedules. For example, I work remote, so I can fly somewhere and not have to worry about getting back on a certain day. I pack a backpack so I don't pay any additional fees, and I'm good to go. I use them only for leisurely trips - I would never use them for times where I actually had to be somewhere at a certain time or day.
