My boyfriend and I might be moving to Raleigh this summer, and we know very little about the area. He will be in grad school at NCSU and I will be (hopefully) getting a job as an art teacher. We would like to live in a neighborhood that is either in walking distance to NCSU or convenient to public transportation. However, we would like to avoid living in a college partying type neighborhood, seeing as how I will be getting up early to work. Another concern is safety and low crime rate. We will be renting, and would like a one or two bedroom for less than 900 a month. A walkable neighborhood with a local restaurant or store would be a great bonus. Anyone have any suggestions?

Check out the Cameron Village area. You might not be able to find a nice 2br in your price range, but a 1br would be doable.

Also, the Glenwood South, Boylan Heights and Cameron Park neighborhoods sometimes have apartments that are parts of houses for rent as well. Here again, a 1br would be more in your price range.

The neighborhoods that are as you describe around NCSU but without the partying college students are going to be pricier than those that are more in the student-oriented areas.

The Raleigh Apartments are really old school and are in an A+ location for NC State, Shopping, etc. NC State is about a 10+ minute walk from there. They are inexpensive but not luxurious at all. Check out their website here: Raleigh Apartments
According to their website, their 2 bedroom 1000 SF apartments start at $665
I'd imagine that these and other cheaper apartments rent quickly. So, I'd start investigating soon if you are serious about moving.

You can occasionally find a small house in the area you describe, sometimes called "University Park" for about $900-1200 a month. There are student rentals mixed with very nice single family homes on the streets between Hillsborough on the south, Wade on the North and Oberlin and Dixie E to W. Now is the time to start looking!!
