We were pretty set on coming to N. Raleigh, but the situation with the Wake County school system has turned us off, majorly. We want our children to go to the same elementary and attend all of their elementary years there... the same middle, high, etc.

I have an acquaintance who lives in Raleigh and she suggested having my kids go to a Magnet School.

What exactly is a Magnet School? Are these Magnet Schools the base school for any areas? Do you have to apply? If my daughter gets accepted for Kingergarten this year, will she be 'IN' until 5th or 6th grade?

Thanks.

Yes you have to apply - usually around February 1st. Then there is a "lottery" and if your child is accepted, usually can be guaranteed that school for elementary school. There are separate magnet schools for the upper levels as well.

Magnet schools have different style cirriculumn - some might be of interest to you and some might not. Also bear in mind that the schools here are based in the county so the schools are all over the county - they are NOT town based.

As far as the public schools, don't take everything people say on here in anger at their own situation as gold - every person is different and we all have our own percpectives and what would be good or bad for us and our kids. Take a look at the Wake County Public Schools website, call the schools for information, call the office of growth management, and even visit - that's the best advice I can give you. There is lots more information on magnet schools on their website as well.

I was 'tapped' to be a part of the AG program in the 2nd grade. I switched to a magnet school in the 3rd grade and stayed at the same elementary, middle, and high schools after the initial switch.

Since there's no guarantee, I wouldn't move here planning on getting in because you could be very disappointed.

Definitely do not move here planning on getting into a magnet. I've been applying to magnet schools for 2 children for over 5 years and have never been accepted for either child. You need to be "OK" with your child attending their base school and look at magnet as a potential alternative.
Magnets do have base areas, but if you are in the base area, you CAN still be reassigned. The only ones who aren't reassigned from magnets are children who were accepted into the magnet program outside of their base school and as I mentioned, not everyone gets in. But if you do get in, they can stay in the magnet system through high school. I recommend reading up on magnet schools on the WCPPS website.
