WRAL keeps advertising a builder that is in Fuquay and Clayton. First floor masters and mid-300s for the prices. I forget the name, but if you go to WRALs home page, the ad may pop up for you too. Not in N Raleigh though.

Thank you so much for all your inputs. The only reason I specifically mentioned Cary and Morrisville is only because I truly have no knowledge of other nearby towns. Mebane looks like something to look into. Any other suburbs within this budget and a reasonable commute to Durham? Dont mind if it is a small town. Thank you once again

You can also check out Creedmoor and Burlington.
There are several single family homes under $300k in Creedmoor but looks like all are already under contract. Burlington is a bit further, about 35 mi from Durham. There are some really nice homes there between $250-300k.

Are the towns of Rolesville and Wake forest worth looking into in terms of good schools, and affordable housing (3 bedroom in the 300k range)? What about Pittsboro, Franklinton, Clayton?

Are these cities safe for families and can we afford to buy there in our price range?

Those towns are probably safe enough, but what is the maximum commute your husband will entertain?

Clayton or Franklinton addresses cover a very broad area, and in many instances a commute to somewhere in Durham would not be recommended if he has to go in every day.
If the commute time matters, what is the general location in Durham?

Commute time of 30-35 minutes should be ok, he will be near RTP Hq in durham

You don't really want Clayton or Franklinton, then.
Nor Burlington. Mebane is a stretch, peddle to the metal and hard during regular drive time traffic.

Was going to say Wake Forest may be a good option thinking commute may have been to downtown Durham; but if it's on the RTP side of town; Wake Forest would be a very un-fun commute.

Pittsboro is very small (for now; there is a HUGE development going in that will basically 10x the current population) and also more expensive than most would assume; while not far from RTP "as the crow flies" it's a pretty long drive.

A Clayton to Durham/RTP commute is...yikes.

The reality is that under $300k for a SFH within a not-long-haul/unpleasant commute is quite difficult. I'd still say North Durham or the east side of Mebane would be your best bet. I also agree it's probably best to rent for a year first as you look for homes. The whole "come visit for a weekend and pick out your house" plan is not realistic in the current market.

Looked up the homes for sale as well as the home recently sold in 27712 zip code (north Durham), all sorts of 3/2 homes popped up under $300K.

Good half hour commute to RTP and I have no idea about the area, other than friends of ours lived in a ranch there for years before moving to Wilmington. They loved it.
