Looks to be coming down & will be demolished w/a new mixed-use hotel/apartment 20-story building.

A somewhat historic landmark, depending on who you ask, to the Raleigh skyline will be coming down in the coming years. Also, appears that the block on Hargett St and Harrington (Legends lot) may also have a new 30+ story high rise as well across from the Dillon.

I'm going to miss this building. When I first moved to Raleigh, this was the tallest building downtown. I still remember driving by it and asking "where is downtown Raleigh?" to my future wife. She said "this is it", and I was like "oh....", having grown up in Atlanta.

I was a bit disappointed to hear it was coming down, it is quite unique. On the other hand, I am glad to see the investment in downtown.

It is different than some other buildings but not unique. They built a couple dozen of them all over.

I meant unique to downtown but I did not realize that was a Holiday Inn design.

Yep there's a bunch of them scattered around the country.

For example, Charleston, SC:

Long Beach, CA:

Austin, TX:

Mobile, AL:

...and many many many other cities across America dating from the 1960s and 1970s.

I have some fond memories of that place, and it’s a bit sad to lose yet another place with some character. Saw some rock shows there (SCOTS was one). Had brunch up in the restaurant and drinks up in the bar several times. It was a decent value to stay there during the early years of the downtown resurgence, so we stayed a few times after a big night out in lieu of an expensive cab ride home. Stayed there during one of the early Hopscotches, too, which was probably my last time there.

Yes, those of us who lived here awhile will miss it. And I understand what the poster who said it was "unique" meant--it doesn't have to be the only one in the universe, just unique to our skyline or other nearby places. I remember growing up near North Hills in the '70s, when it was the most prominent thing "downtown" you could see. There has been a running joke for many years about whether the top floor ever rotated or not (no, of course--but it seems EVERYBODY who grew up here heard that it did, when it opened. Thus a running joke).

An architectural curiosity for sure, but it's a poor use of the land on which it sits -- and from what I've seen inside, it's also functionally obsolete.
