You're from the Long Island forum....is this for you, or parents/in-laws?
Selma would be a huge culture shock for someone used to the NYC metro area.
It would be for my husband and I. We have no children, so not leaving any family behind. We do have friends that moved to the area a few years ago. Plus a nephew moving to Raleigh area.

Being from L.I., twingles would know what sort of cultural adjustments you may need to make.
I suggest you should investigate medical services in any area you relocate to. A key point for anyone in their 70's, IMO. Availability for PCPs and specialists without a long commute to Raleigh, Durham, or Chapel Hill is something you probably don't want to overlook. I cannot say that such are lacking severely. Just saying.

I know everyone thinks "well everyone moves to NC and they're happy" but without knowing a lot more about you it's impossible to say if this is a good fit. I would not do it, in no way shape or form is it remotely close to what you're used to and I know from your previous posts your husband is not down with moving. Some people want to make a whole change, a complete 180, from what they have. They have been buying into a certain lifestyle for a long time. If that's you, it might work. Dropping yourself from everything you're used to into Selma will probably not go well for at least one of you if you haven't been moving towards that much of a different lifestyle. Any reason you are looking so far afield from the Raleigh area?
Also Mike makes good points about health care. While it is not impossible to move away from - say - the Raleigh area and find good healthcare, there are certainly "healthcare deserts" which you do not want to deal with as you age.

WE are looking for housing that we can afford. Selling our home here and want to be able to just buy a home there with no mortgage. We live in a very small house here and not the big homes most people think of when thinking of Long Island. Thankfully my DH has decided moving is right for us now so we are both on board with a move.
I'm with Twingles. Not originally from LI but lived there for a number of years. Would not move to Selma. Perhaps check out areas like Creedmoor, Youngsville, Franklinton? There may be areas in Durham as well that will have what you are looking for.
How would this area be for a couple in their 70’s. Looking at a small ranch house?
I could not agree more with what others said about access to healthcare. What is not a concern when someone is in their 30s becomes a very large concern when they are in their 70s. Sure, we've come a long way with Telehealth, but that's no substitute for access to a flourishing medical community like there is in the Triangle.
My own Realtor, when I relocated here in 2000, responded to my inquiry of "What about Selma?" with a one-word response -- "No."
Admittedly, my needs/situation were far different in 2000 than what yours could be in 2024. But it's definitely worth your while to come down and spend a week or two -- or longer -- here before making the move.
Best of luck in your search!
