My husband and I visited Raleigh last Labor Day weekend - we are considering a move from upstate NY and have heard great things about the area. We are looking for a slower-paced lifestyle and friendly family-oriented people.
We loved the area but one thing troubled us...where was everyone?? We drove around town and it was really dead. I wondered if it's usually like that on the weekends or if the holiday had something to do with it? I would have thought there'd be some sort of town activities (a fair or something...I don't know...) but we couldn't find anything at all going on. Was everyone at home barbequing with friends perhaps?
Finally around dinner time we made our way over to Chapel Hill and there were plenty of live folks and a good vibe about which was a relief... I was kind of disappointed but since we were only there the one time and it was Labor Day, I'm not sure if what I saw was the norm.
It definitely clears out for Labor Day. The colleges clear out. People go to the mountains and beaches. Some people remain. If you ventured out to Jordan Lake you might find a bunch of people enjoying the end of summer. And when NC State has its home opener football game that weekend, they draw big crowds. But other than that, pretty quiet usually.
Okay....twice people mentioned "Labor Day" when it was Memorial Day that just passed .....but anywho, people where either at the beach, the pool (just opened) or at the lakes. Not much else going on. You should have come this weekend as it is First Friday....now that's a happening event!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was seriously confused by that!

Ditto!
Downtown they have a parade and a ceremony which would have been one event going on.
Memorial Day is the start of the summer/beach season here. Anyone who isn't traveling towards water is as you said grilling with friends at someone's house.
You probably won't get a good perception of activity in most towns if you visit during a holiday. Come on back!

If anyone has any thoughts I'd appreciate it.
They are trying their best to promote downtown, but the truth is they are struggling quite a bit. A lot was put into it, but the results are well below expectations. Maybe once more of the condos are in things will change for the better.
